Light Painting in Derbyshire

Well one of the last activities we held outside the clubhouse in 2023 was a visit to deepest darkest Derbyshire to do some light painting with the assistance of Stephen Elliott.

The location was Monsal Tunnel at Millers Dale in Derbyshire. So in early December a small group of us met at the National Park car park. From there it was a short walk along the old railway path until we reached the lime kilns which was the location for the first shoot.

Cascades of sparks from the top of the lime kilns was supplemented by patterns of light against the walls of the structure which with long exposures of up to 5 mins, gave some amazing results.

We then continued over the river bridge and into the Monsal Tunnel. Having found a suitably dry bit (it tends to drip a lot in the tunnel), Stephen set up his equipment and with his guidance, we started taking our pictures.

It’s amazing how, with long exposures, what seems to be a random waving of light wands, torches and other paraphernalia turn into incredible and beautiful images.

As numbers have to be limited doing this kind of photography, we are planning a second event in February 2024.

In the meantime a big thank you to Stephen and his assistant and you can see some of our images below.
